Choosing a Garage Door That's Right for the Climate

If you are going to be replacing your current garage door, then you might be tossing around the idea of using the opportunity to change up the type of garage door you have. Maybe you feel another type would enhance the look of your home's exterior, or you just feel another type may be more accommodating to your needs in some way. However, you'll need to make sure you are considering the climate you live in when you are thinking of different garage doors.

Some garage door materials do better than others in different climates and you can learn more about this in the following article.

Garage doors for regions with a lot of rain, snow, and freezing temperatures

A vinyl garage door is a very good choice in regions with a lot of wet weather and colder temperatures. These conditions won't affect the vinyl, and vinyl garage doors tend to have greater insulation, which can help to control the temperature inside the garage.

A steel garage door could be a good choice because it will certainly be able to handle both moisture and cold. You do want to be sure the steel door has been properly weatherized to help protect against corrosion, but when this is done you can have a garage door that lasts for a long time.

Some examples of garage doors that may not be a great choice for this type of region would include wood, which can swell, rot, and experience other damage and wear, and fiberglass which can crack when exposed to lower temperatures.

Garage doors for regions with excessive heat conditions

Fiberglass garage doors can be a good fit for homes located in areas where the temperatures can get quite hot, such as in desert climates. While fiberglass can crack in the cold, it will not crack in the heat. Fiberglass can also help to keep the temperature cooler in the garage on those very hot days.

Vinyl is also great for hot climates. The vinyl doors can handle high temperatures without becoming damaged. They are also lightweight but can be insulated well to help hold the cooler temperatures inside of the garage. They don't require repainting to keep them looking fresh since their color goes all the way through the material.

An example of a garage door that may not work well in very hot areas would be wood garage doors that can end up warping and even cracking when regularly exposed to such high temperatures.
