Should I Repair Or Replace My Garage Door?

Garage doors can last a really long time, but that doesn't mean they're indestructible. At some point, you'll be faced with the question of whether or not you need to do a simple repair job to cover up some damage or replace your garage door altogether. While garage door repair may be cheaper initially, you need to factor in the long term benefits of having a brand-new garage door installation instead.

Below are some questions you can ask yourself to determine if a garage door repair is the right route, or if replacement will be more cost-effective.

Is It Damaged?

One of the main reasons that homeowners hire a garage door repair service in the first place is because their garage door been damaged in some way. Either that means a storm has rolled through and has defaced the exterior, or the door may have been hit by a car and gone off the door tracks. Alternatively, the rollers in the spring may have snapped, which will need to be fixed by a professional technician. Either way, you'll need to assess the state of repair and consider how much it will cost in total. If it's more than 50% of the price of a new garage door installation, you should opt for a replacement instead. If the damage is minimal, then a simple repair will be a better option instead.

Is It Old?

As mentioned above, garage doors can last upwards of 15 to 20 years with proper maintenance and regular repairs. If your garage door is reaching the halfway point of that lifespan, you might consider springing for a garage door installation to save on future repair bills. As it ages, the frequency and cost of garage door repairs will become significant, and it may be more financially viable for you to simply have it replaced instead. Along with a new garage door, you should also have a warranty that goes along with it. If your garage door is still fairly new, then a repair will be better for you and your wallet.

Is It Outdated?

Garage door technology has come a long way over the last few decades, making what was once a simple garage into a space that allows you to expand your living space. In today's work from home environment, many homeowners are choosing to turn their garage into an office, but in order to do that, they'll need to have it insulated. New garage door installations can come with quite a bit of insulation that will help with temperature regulation, even allowing you to turn it into a spare bedroom if you want. If your garage door is in need of repair, but you also notice that it's a bit outdated, consider upgrading to a newer door.
